API Q125 Steel Grade Specifications for Deep Well Applications

API Q125 is a high-strength steel grade designated by the American Petroleum Institute (API) for use in deep well service. It is specifically designed to provide the necessary mechanical properties to withstand the extreme pressures and loads encountered in deep drilling operations. However, it is not generally intended for use in sour condensate wells.

Mechanical Properties

The mechanical properties of API Q125 steel grade are as follows:

  • Minimum Yield Strength: 125,000 psi
  • Maximum Yield Strength: 150,000 psi
  • Minimum Tensile Strength: 135,000 psi
  • Maximum Hardness: No limit specified – hardness variation requirement

These properties ensure that API Q125 steel can accommodate the high stresses typical of deep well environments, without compromising on safety or structural integrity.

Testing and Inspection

API Q125 steel is subject to rigorous testing and inspection protocols to ensure its suitability for deep well service:

  • Hardness Testing: Quadrant hardness testing is required, ensuring uniformity across the steel's surface without any specified limits other than the variation between readings.
  • Impact Testing: Impact testing is mandatory for each heat and/or lot, verifying the steel's toughness and resistance to fracture under low-temperature conditions.
  • Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): NDT inspection is required, with two methods of inspection typically employed. Electromagnetic (EMI) and Ultrasonic Testing (UT) are commonly performed on API Q125 products to detect any internal or surface defects.

Applications and Limitations

While API Q125 steel is ideal for deep well service, it is not generally recommended for sour condensate wells. This is due to its material properties that may not provide the necessary resistance to sulfide stress cracking (SSC) and other forms of corrosion associated with sour environments.
