What is a Downhole Pump?

The term "downhole pump" refers to a specific type of pump used in the oil and gas industry, particularly during artificial gas lift operations. It is a critical component of the hydraulic system and plays a vital role in extracting fluids, such as gas, from a wellbore. The downhole pump is designed to be installed deep within a well, often several thousand feet underground, and is responsible for imparting the necessary energy to move the fluid from the bottom of the well to the surface.

Function and Operation

The downhole pump functions by drawing in the well fluid through its intake valve and then forcing it out through the discharge valve using a combination of pressure and suction. This process is achieved using a reciprocating or rotating mechanism that creates the necessary pressure changes within the pump to move the fluid. The pump is connected to a hydraulic system on the surface that provides the power and control for its operation.

Types of Downhole Pumps

There are several different types of downhole pumps available, each designed for specific applications and well conditions. Some common types include:

  • Progressing cavity pumps (PCP): These pumps use a rotating screw-type mechanism to move the fluid. They are often used in wells with solids-laden fluids and can handle high differential pressures.
  • Electrical submersible pumps (ESPs): These pumps consist of a motor and centrifugal pump combination. They are commonly used in oil wells and can handle a wide range of viscosities and production rates.
  • Jet pumps: Jet pumps use high-pressure injection water or gas to draw in well fluid. They are suitable for low-volume production wells and are relatively inexpensive.
  • Hydraulic piston pumps: These pumps use reciprocating pistons to move the fluid, typically relying on pressure changes created by the pump itself rather than an external power source.

Importance of Downhole Pumps

The downhole pump plays a crucial role in artificial gas lift operations, particularly in low-pressure or non-flowing wells. By imparting the necessary energy to move the fluid, it enables efficient production of hydrocarbons, increasing production rates and ultimately maximizing recoverable reserves from the well. Downhole pumps also help reduce the need for artificial lift methods that rely on surface equipment, such as rod pumps or gas compressors, which can be more cumbersome and costly to operate.

Downhole pumps are an essential component of oil and gas production operations, particularly in wells where artificial gas lift is required. They provide an efficient means of lifting fluids from deep within the wellbore, enabling increased production rates and optimizing hydrocarbon recovery.
