USS C90 Steel Grade Specifications and Applications
USS C90 is a proprietary restricted yield strength steel grade developed by U.S. Steel for specialized use in sour condensate wells. This high-strength steel is designed to provide exceptional resistance to sulfide stress cracking (SSCC), making it an ideal choice for applications in corrosive downhole environments.
Mechanical Properties
The mechanical properties of USS C90 steel grade are tailored to ensure a balance of strength and ductility, suitable for the challenging conditions encountered in sour service wells:
- Minimum Yield Strength: 90,000 psi
- Maximum Yield Strength: 105,000 psi
- Minimum Tensile Strength: 100,000 psi
- Maximum Hardness: 24.0 HRC (mean), 26.0 HRC (individual)
Manufacturing and Quality Control
USS C90 steel is manufactured with precise control over chemical composition, heat treatment, and hardness levels to achieve its superior resistance to SSCC. The inspection requirements and dimensional tolerances adhere to the API 5CT specification for grade C90, ensuring consistency and reliability:
- API 5CT Compliance: The steel meets the stringent requirements set forth by API 5CT for grade C90.
- Hardness Testing: Conducted with increased frequency for casing and non-upset tubing (first and last and every tenth joint in between) and upset tubing (first and last and every 25th joint in between).
- SSCC Testing: Optional SSCC testing is available upon customer request, performed to U.S. Steel Standard Mill Practice P-1004 (NACE Standard TM-0177, Method A), guaranteeing a minimum threshold stress of 85% of the specified minimum yield strength.
Applications
USS C90 steel is specifically designed for use in:
- Sour condensate wells where resistance to SSCC is critical.
- Applications requiring high-strength steel with enhanced toughness and ductility.
