API T95 Steel Grade Specifications for Sour Service Applications

API T95 is a controlled yield strength steel grade specified by the American Petroleum Institute (API) for use in sour service applications, which are characterized by the presence of hydrogen sulfide (H2S). This grade is designed to offer superior resistance to sulfide stress cracking (SSC) and is closely related to API C95 and USS C95, with specific requirements for hardness and SSCC testing.

Mechanical Properties

The mechanical properties of API T95 steel grade are as follows:

• Minimum Yield Strength: 95,000 psi
• Maximum Yield Strength: 110,000 psi
• Minimum Tensile Strength: 105,000 psi
• Maximum Hardness: 25.4 HRC (mean), 27.0 HRC (individual)

These properties provide a balance of strength and ductility, suitable for the demanding conditions encountered in sour service environments.

Hardness and SSCC Testing

API T95 steel is subject to extensive hardness testing to ensure consistency and reliability:

• Hardness Testing: The mean hardness is capped at 25.4 HRC, with individual readings not exceeding 27.0 HRC.
• SSCC Testing: In accordance with NACE Standard TM-0177, Method A, SSCC testing is required to demonstrate the steel's resistance to cracking in the presence of H2S. The minimum threshold stress required for SSCC testing is 80% of the specified minimum yield strength.

Applications and Performance

API T95 steel is specifically designed for use in sour condensate wells and other sour service applications where the risk of SSC is high. Its controlled properties make it a preferred choice for tubing and casing in such environments.
